Apple Varieties
Sholan Farm apples are both versatile and flavorful. They can be eaten fresh or used in a number of recipes from appetizers to desserts. 
Here are the varieties available on the farm.


Ginger Gold
Sweet, tangy and juicy, Ginger Gold apples are an early apple, harvested in early August and available until September. This is a crisp and juicy apple with an excellent taste. Ginger Gold apples are round with a smooth green-yellow skin that has a slight red blush. The Ginger Gold apple is an excellent multi-purpose, eating baking, and cooking apple.

Paula Red
A relatively new, high quality apple, equally good for cooking and eating. It colors early to a solid red blush, but should only be picked near maturity. The flesh is light to creamy, with tart flavor. The Paula Red ripens in late August, early September.

Macintosh 
The Mac is especially juicy, slightly tart and the most aromatic of all apples, with two-toned red and green skin. The flesh is very white, faintly tinged pink and rather soft. The apple ripens in the third week of September.

Cortland 
A large apple good for baking, that is moderately juicy and fairly sweet. The fruit is red or read-striped with pale yellow-green ground color. Flesh is very white, with slight green tingle near the core. The Cortland ripens mid-September to early October.

Empire
A medium-to-large, round, firm dark red apple with a sweet, almost spicy flavor. A juicy, good eating apple even better for baking. Ripens early October.

Golden Delicious
Golden yellow to light yellow-green tender skin, sometimes with a pale orange blush. This firm, crisp, juicy apple has a mild, sweet, distinctive flavor. Excellent for eating, salad, sauce, the Golden Delicious is available in late October.

Macoun
With their wine-red color with gold accents, Macouns are highly regarded for their aroma and sweet-tart, juicy flavor. This dessert apple is excellent for eating fresh and is available in early October.

Red Delicious 
Available in late October, this dark red apple is known for its unique shape. The sweet, juicy taste of this apple improves with storage. It is good for eating fresh, but is not recommended for cooking.
